 Awareness raising on environmental impact assessment of offshore windfarms

 

 

The aim of the project is to raise the knowledge and awareness of Estonian experts, competent authorities, developers and general public about environmental impacts of offshore windfarms and their assessment (EIA) and enhance cooperation between those interest groups. Project activities include background info collection, producing Estonian version of guidelines for EIA for offshore windfarms and an information leaflet for the general public as well as organising a seminar for all interest groups. Project was financially supporeted by the NGO Fund financed by the EEA and Norweigian Financial Mechanisms.

 

-          Estonian round table on “Offshore wind farms in Estonia and assessment of their environmental impacts” (21.05.2009, Tallinn, Estonia)

The goals of the round table were to bring together different stakeholders to discuss the goals and further activities related to development of offshore wind farms in Estonia; to discuss the problems related to the use of offshore wind energy and try to find solutions together and, to introduce the Baltic guidelines for EIA for offshore wind farms and discuss its further use in Estonia.

54 participants from different Estonian stakeholder groups participated in the event: representatives from Estonian Parliament, Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Interior, Environmental Board, Maritime Administration, scientific institutions, NGOs (Estonian Ornithological Society, Estonian Fund for Nature, SEI-Tallinn), EIA consultant companies, wind energy developers etc.

-          Leaflet in Estonian on "Environmental impacts of offshore windfarms and their assessment” (published in May 2009)

 

 The leaflet gives a short overview on pros and cons of wind energy, describes the potential impacts of offshore wind farms on the marine environment and introduces necessary investigations for assessment of those impacts.

The leaflet is meant for giving an overview of the issue for officials, wind farm developers and interested general public. 

The Baltic Guidelines for EIA for offshore wind farms developed in frame of the project “Concept development for an environmental impact assessment for offshore wind parks in the Baltic States” were used for compiling the content of the leaflet.
